It wasn’t mentioned in Steve Ballmer’s keynote on CES, but apparently Microsoft had something(s) left up its sleeve for the Zune users.
Firmware update this spring
This spring a firmware update will provide all Zune HDs playback of MPEG-4 part 2 Advanced Simple Profile videos. This means your Zune HD will support playback of video files in popular formats like Xvid. Due to the restrictions of being proprietary software the other popular format, DivX, is unlikely to find its way to the Zune HD.
Another major improvement that would be given by the firmware update is the ability to create Smart DJ playlists on the go. For the time being that’s only possible with intervention of the Zune Software.
