Cracked my Zune HD screen

I was very busy lately with all kinds of stuff which resulted in a low activity on HFE, but here I am, back for good ;) .

As my title reveals, I had an accident with my Zune HD. Although they call it gorilla glass, I managed to crack the screen of my Zune HD. It was inside my pocket with the metal back against my leg and the glass in front — this is a tip: always put gadgets with their glass against you leg inside your pocket — when I accidentally hit a table corner with my leg. After I realized I felt no pain, I checked my pocket and there it was: a 2 cm crack in my screen. At that moment my heart broke…

I loved my Zune HD from the first time I saw it, we had very good times together and then suddenly that happened. I began to check if it still worked, but it soon became clear that the touch screen was totally disoriented. When I go to the home screen and just leave it untouched for 15 seconds, it thinks I selected ‘radio’ and it opens my FM-tuner.

I called Zune support already, but they explained to me that a cracked screen isn’t covered by my warranty. I could try to send my Zune HD in for repair, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll accept it or would be able to repair it. Microsoft has a repair service for cracked screens of older Zunes, but not for the HD. However, they said, I could try a third party repair. I already did some research and apparently PDASmart.com could take care of my little problem. That looks like the best option for now.

I made this post as a refference for all the people who’ll crack their screen accidentally in the future. This is only the first episode, the saga isn’t over yet. I’ll keep you updated, so everybody will know what to do if it ever happens to them.

In afghanistan. Was preflighting a chinook, caught my uniform and torn the pocket. ZuneHD fell 15 feet to the ground and shattered the screen like a car windshield. Yikes- very upset about it.

  2. If only your glass is cracked you could sent it to pdasmart.com. They’ve got a repair part (they also offer repair services) for the screen and could fix your Zune HD. If you’re OLED screen underneath the glass is also damaged, I think there’s nothing to do about it. I shipped my Zune HD this morning to PDASmart.
As I mentioned my article, cracking your screen voids your warranty, so a third-party repair is the only solution.

So did the repair go well? My Zune HD got knocked off of my music stand today by flute player next to me in band and spiderweb cracked the whole screen on the foot of the stand! Part of me died then. Just wondering if they’re reliable. :D

  4. The repair went very well. They certainly are reliable. My Zune HD is alive and kicking. No traces left behind. Craftsmanship ;)

    Hi Korneel,

Thanks for the info, I will try contacting PDAsmart when I get back home. I am in Europe right now, also, in Florence, Italy. I was walking down the street tonight and I pulled my headphones out of my hip pocket and that made my matches and a receipt fall out on the sidewalk. I had my zune in my breast pocket because I didn’t want it to get damaged or scratched in my pants pocket. I thought it would be safer in the breast pocket. Well, you know what happened, I’m sure. I bent over to pick up two things I don’t even care about and the zune slipped out of my pocket to the hard stone sidewalk and cracked. Fortunately, it still seems to work. But, it’s not pretty any more. So, I need to figure out what to do when I get back to Miami. Thanks.

How long did the repair take? and when you got your Zune back was all your music erased?

  7. I think it was about 3 weeks maximum, but you’ve got to keep in mind that I live in Europe and I shipped it with the regular Belgian Post, which is quite slow. After a week it arrived at PDASmart. 2 weeks later I had it back. Nothing was erased. Everything still on it. They shipped it with FedEx so one day after receiving the money, I had it fixed and ready for use over here in Europe.

  9. Hi Conor

Go here and fill it in.

It’s as simple as that ;-)

  10. Conor Barr says:

thats great man! should i add anything into the special requests box?

  11. You can add that you found them by HelloFromEurope.com ;-)
I don’t think you’ve got to add something there. Only if you’ve got a special remark or something. But normally you should leave it blank.

    Success!
